Good morning, everyone! I’m so sorry that I’ve been absent from blogging for a while. Life has been crazy hectic as usual, even with the national shutdown from Covid-19. I am still working full time (and even recorded a 13 hour workday this week!) for a few reasons. Namely, we are stuck finishing our basement ourselves due to having the work crew stopped mid-stream by this outbreak and we are left with no countertops and no carpet anywhere due to it. I also opened up another side business to run as I work through the quilt load I have that my husband will help me manage…I will blog a bit more about that in about an hour! Stay tuned!
Onto this wonderful quilt that my client brought to me to custom quilt. Kathryn hails from the GREAT State of Texas. I wish I had some before pictures and an overall picture, but with the state of my basement right now, the area I use for photography is left in limbo 🙁 I am completely dismayed by that and could not get a full picture.
When I had talked with Kathryn via emails, I had told her that I envisioned quilting this top with two thread colors. Does this look like two thread colors to you? I mean, I just couldn’t do that. When you see the masterpiece, you’ll understand why.
May I now introduce to you Kathryn’s Pandemonium quilt. Kim McLean was the designer. Kathryn pieced this with Kaffe Fassett fabrics and it was thousands of applique pieces that went into this top. I can only show you sections of it, and I am terribly sorry about that.
Well, there it is, in bits and pieces. I have another potential show quilt on frame right now and it will be done next week. If I can share pictures of it, I shall. If not, please know that I’m busting at the seams to share more gorgeous quilts with you!

The quilt this blog is centered around has been in the making for quite some time. I remember seeing this in bits and stages nearly 2 years ago, as my client, Connie Tieche tediously pieced a Fancy Forest quilt from Elizabeth Hartman. This came as a kit and I have to say, there are so many wonderful fabrics that I think they were all my favorite! The color spectrum and the layout were just perfect.
When longarming, I always like to start by taking a few photos of the quilt. One of the full quilt and several of detail areas. I then print out the photos, put tracing paper over them and design them with pencil. Once I have what I like, I draft it out with ink on tracing paper and take photos, wiring the images to my client for approval. If I feel that I don’t have a firm grasp on the finished scale, I place a piece of acetate over the quilt top and mark on it the design intent. That way, I can check things and make sure I have it all figured out (and it’s a this step that I can lay my circle and arc templates over the design to determine what sizes to use). I’m not a load-and-go kind of quilter, where I just load a top without any design thought and start stitching. Something tells me that wouldn’t end well for me! Here is a picture of my drafted ideas:I used around 40-45 different colors of Glide thread on this quilt. I can’t say for sure, because there were so many cones of thread out on the floor behind me that I had to clear it all up twice just to advance the quilt into another color range and plop down more thread colors! When you carry over 160 colors of Glide thread, this part is a whole lot easier! I don’t charge for thread changes on custom quilting, as an hourly rate is much more fair for things than a $5 charge for each color change. I think my clients agree!
Let’s take a look at the full finished quilt. This was quilted with a double layer of Quilters Dream Batting. A 70/30 blend was used on the bottom for strength and a layer of wool was used on top for puff. That combination always quilts so lovely:I always love to peer in closer, so here is more of the eye candy of this quilt:and:And peering in even closer gives yet more detail and allows you to see the wood grain background fill:It was such a fun time quilting this masterpiece that finished at over 405,000 stitches on my Innova. I enjoyed every minute of breathing yet more life into this gorgeous quilt of Connie’s.

Dianne Edgar Lowe’s One Block Wonder was a fun quilt to freemotion longarm!
My client, Dianne Edgar Lowe, hails from the state of Washington and found me on a One Block Wonder forum on Facebook. After getting her quilt back from a longarmer, Dianne made the difficult decision to arduously unpick everything and spent 160 hours doing so. Here it is as it landed at my “factory”:After sketching out my ideas and getting Dianne’s approval, I loaded it and went to work. Here is the final result:This was quilted on a double batting of Quilters Dream Blend and Wool with Glide 40 weight thread in over 25 different colors, so that the thread would blend more into the myriad of fabric colors. Joyce Hite was at it again, this time with a class quilt that needed some finishing touches.
While I know it has been a little while since my last blog post, I do have a pretty good excuse…well, at least I think it is! I’ve spent the better part of three months collaborating on a show quilt with the fantastically talented Joyce Hite. I so wish I could share with you what came off my frame on that quilt, but that will have to wait a bit.
So, today, I bring to you another quilt that Joyce Hite pieced! Joyce created this quilt as a class quilt and brought it to me for “light” custom. I love how Joyce thinks…here version and my version of light custom is rather the same. Most would consider this to be moderate custom, but not Joyce and I! And, certainly not after having quilted that show quilt!
I cannot tell you the pattern or the fabric line that was used in this quilt, but I can tell you that it was so friendly and comfortable looking and the backing had the hue of a well-worn pair of denim jeans. At 80”x 100”, it was certainly a larger quilt, but the design didn’t take long to form, what with the body of if being two different blocks set on point. I drew out my intentions onto clear film I placed over the quilt and texted Joyce my ideas. I got the go-ahead and on frame it went. We chose a deluxe grade of Quilters Dream Cotton Natural batting and glide thread in three hues on the top and two hues on the back.
To create the pearls in the white area, I created the file digitally on my Intelliquilter computer and stitched them out digitally. Everything else you see was done with freemotion and rulerwork on my 26″ Innova. Here are more detailed pictures.
Here are more close-ups of the individual block elements. I just loved getting a chance to put my touches onto such a gorgeous quilt. It was so regal and so rich with color and so soft and quiet at the same time.
And the back! What about that back? Here it is. I just couldn’t get a good picture of the beautiful hue of the backing or how the threadwork played on it, but I just have to say, it was a stunner.
